In psychology, trauma refers to a deep emotional injury caused by one or more events that exceed a person's coping capacities and permanently alter the nervous and experiential system. Trauma is not an event, but the effect of an event on one's inner life. It changes how people perceive themselves, others, and the world – often towards threat, loss of control, and fundamental uncertainty. Neurologically, severe trauma leads to changes in the hippocampus, amygdala, and prefrontal cortex, which permanently affects memory, stress regulation, and decision-making abilities. As a universal literary motif, trauma is the foundation of almost every complex main character: it explains behaviors that would seem incomprehensible without this background. It creates empathy for characters who act in morally questionable ways. And it provides tension – the question of whether and how the trauma can be overcome drives the emotional plot forward, even when the external action stalls. In thriller literature, trauma is the engine, not the backdrop.
