The 45-year-old Berlin criminal defense attorney is a senior partner at a renowned Berlin law firm. With his above-average IQ, he is considered one of the most capable lawyers in the city. Since his son Felix died ten years ago shortly after birth, and his marriage subsequently failed, Stern has lived a secluded private life, and nowadays even his tailored suit can no longer hide that he's going downhill. He is torn from this everyday life when ten-year-old Simon wants to hire him as his lawyer, claiming that he murdered a man with an ax fifteen years ago (i.e., five years before he was born). And indeed, Robert finds a skeletal corpse with an ax in its skull at the mentioned crime scene.
