Next to a disused subway shaft lies the stuffy shed that Oscar calls his “hideout.” It's surprisingly comfortably furnished, with most of it coming from the curb: three of the four concrete walls are lined with homemade bookshelves filled with books. There's electricity and a washbasin, a suitcase repurposed as a desk on two brick pedestals – and even water. There's also a portable TV and a small bed next to the cooking area with a Bunsen burner. Only down here does Oscar feel safe.
