Anna Spiegel enters the life of psychiatrist Viktor Larenz on the island of Parkum. She introduces herself as a children's book author from Berlin. Her request is unusual and unsettling: Anna suffers from a rare form of schizophrenia in which the characters from her novels become physically real to her. Viktor is persuaded into an initial therapy session. At first glance, Anna appears young, but her clothing and her way of speaking suggest she is over thirty. And it soon becomes clear that she will not leave the island without having told her entire story.
