So... and now I'm „tormenting“ poor students too.
It is a great honor for me! I am taking over the 11th Poetics Professorship at the University of Koblenz Landau.

Here is an excerpt from the original press release from the university:

Sebastian Fitzek is the new holder of the Landau Poetics Professorship

Sebastian Fitzek is receiving the Poetics Professorship because his books create a fictional reality that leads the reader into the darkest corners of their psyche. His intelligent plot construction reveals that nothing is as it seems. Although readers know that a novel's story is the author's product of imagination, they demand a credible plot and lifelike characters. The author is expected to create a „true lie.“ However, the challenge the writer must face is not solely this inherent contradiction. Every reader applies their individual standard of truth, and fiction is often scrutinized by stricter criteria than reality, which is frequently much more random and improbable than the purely invented plot.

On Wednesday, January 10, Sebastian Fitzek will give an overview of his entire literary work titled „Best-of Sebastian Fitzek“ (8 PM at Universum Kino, doors open at 7 PM). On Thursday, January 11, he will deliver his poetics lecture „The Fictional Reality“ at the Jugendstil-Festhalle Landau (8 PM, doors open at 7 PM). Using his own and other popular works of suspense literature as examples, Sebastian Fitzek will explore the spectrum of tension between believable lies and unbelievable reality in his lecture, while also offering insight into his own writing workshop. To gain insight into the author's personality and life journey, a moderated discussion with Fitzek will follow.

TO THE POETRY LECTURESHIP

Since 2010, the Center for Cultural and Knowledge Dialogue (ZKW) at the University of Koblenz-Landau has been hosting the nationally renowned Poetics Professorship. The events of the Landau Poetics Professorship are aimed equally at students and the literarily interested public from Landau and the region. The University's Poetics Professorship in Landau sees itself as a forum for cultural exchange with the goal of bringing literature to life. It aims to give students and the interested public the opportunity to see and understand literary works and questions about them from the perspective of the author reflecting on their creative work. The Poetics Professorship is funded by the Fix Foundation and VR Bank Südpfalz.

Previous Poetics lecturers included Büchner Prize winners Sibylle Lewitscharoff, F. C. Delius, Daniel Kehlmann, Rafik Schami, Eric Emmanuel Schmitt, Theresia Walser, Karl Heinz Ott, Thomas Brussig, Abbas Khider, and Judith Holofernes. The Poetics lectureship has now become a permanent institution in Landau's cultural and university life.
